The wealth of great progressive rock material still being mined by the reissue companies seems to be greater than ever! This was originally released in 1969 and the combination of Hammond organ, Blues guitar and wailing vocals is classic. There is an orchestral feel to a lot of the music – without going down the path of bringing orchestra’s into the mix – as well as power and variety. It was a time when bands wanted to try different rhythms and add spoken words and psychedelic images to the most mundane of concepts – 'Mrs Coopers Pie’ – but because they hadn’t yet overblown themselves the result is fresh and easy to listen to.The centrepiece of the original album was 'Aries’, an 8 minute paean to Holsts 'The Planets’ with spoken word, keyboard solos and guitar freakouts plus some superb drumming holding the whole thing together. Hearing a very Arthur Brown-ey Scottish voice intoning '9 Times the colour red explodes like heated blood' has to bring a smile to the sternest of hearts but there is a charm and possibly even a naivety that really did win me over.The other major piece on the album was 'Shadow of Man’ with its drumbeat opening and bassline/heartbeat to carry the listener into the song. The organ is huge and the whole thing has the feel of a great live number. Copies of the original album go for well over ?150 in good condition and they don’t come with the single 'Child on a Crossing’ or the b-side 'Lucifer Corpus’ which is actually worth adding to the album. As is usual with Ork there is a bonus disc consisting of the best that the later band managed to put out and there are a fair few winners here as well – 'Buffalo’ is atmospheric and mellotron laden while 'Dianes Big Daddy’ has some superb acid-tinged guitar work but there really isn’t a duff track on either disc. As is also normal for Ork the booklet that accompanies this is excellent - well researched and informative. There are a lot of similarities to The Nice and to The Crazy World Of Arthur Brown but in the end the album stands up well to the nearly 40 years since it was originally released and as an example of Scottish psychedelia it really is well up there.

Clocks Change This Spring

I doubt many of us will be springing out of bed on the morning of Sunday 30 March 2008, when we've lost a precious hour's sleep. On the positive side, it does signal the beginning of British Summer Time and longer, lighter evenings. (more...)
